What will life be like for a child without a hip and knee joint? A lifetime of sitting? Lying down? Will he crawl on all fours, with his face to the ground? Here even Kasisi cannot help.
The boy was born as the ninth child in the family. His mother died during childbirth and his single father, well into his sixties, was unable to care for the disabled baby. He brought the boy to us at the Home.
The doctors consulting Lucky left us with no illusions. No surgery would help when key joints had not developed. We even heard a recommendation to amputate both legs. Sister Mariola did not allow it. – At most, he will not use them.
During subsequent stays in Kasisi, I saw Lucky mostly sitting with the babies group in a specially adapted seat. Until one time someone grabbed me by the calf in the Kasisi playground and tried to climb up. That’s Lucky!!! During the following visits to Kasisi, I witnessed the toddler getting up and moving out into the world.
A colossal role was played by the rehabilitation in the centre that was created in Kasisi thanks to you. The other children also played a great role. Healthy or disabled, it made no difference to them. They invited him with them everywhere, and he tried to keep up with them every time. Supporting himself against walls, climbing up on benches and playhouses – he overcame thousands of obstacles every day until he was finally ready to try out the walker.
Because Kasisi is a family. Here, everyone is a member. There is no better, no worse. Everyone feels it and everyone knows it. With their care, their smile, their recognition of each child’s needs, the sisters melt away all the hurt that, like ice, has covered their tiny hearts.
Thank you for giving these children a sense of security. You make sure that nothing is impossible, and we are not worried about whether we will be able to provide Lucky with everything he needs.
Today, I have no doubt whatsoever that Lucky will make it in life. That it is from his weaknesses that grows the strength that pushes him upwards. Perhaps any of you would still like to accompany Lucky on his journey? Something feels like it will be INCREDIBLE, just like he is.

A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
