Is It Always Better to Give a Fishing Rod Than a Fish?

Date added: 07.01.2025

After 11 years of supporting the children at Kasisi, we are reminded daily of how harmful the common wisdom can be that says, “It’s always better to give a fishing rod than a fish.” Is that really the key to helping people in need?

What kind of “fishing rod” could we possibly give to our beloved Nelly? She is disabled, with severe neurological impairment, and lives only thanks to the unwavering determination of Sister Mariola. Nelly requires constant 24/7 care because she suffers from fainting spells and other episodic conditions. Though she’s over 30 years old, she still attends preschool-level classes. The Sisters work with her daily on simple tasks to stimulate her brain. Soon, she will undergo another surgery, as the shunt implanted in her brain long ago is reaching the end of its lifespan.

Despite her severe condition, no one at Kasisi views Nelly through that lens. To us, she’s simply our little Nelly, who gives what she has most in abundance—unconditional love. There’s not a single walk through Kasisi where she doesn’t hug someone and say, “I LOVE YOU.” As she strolls around with her caregiver Spiwe, spreading her love, she truly is the Queen of Everything!

On the other hand, Evelyn needed a fishing rod from Kasisi. She received it, made good use of it, and is now ready to embark on great fishing expeditions. Evelyn came to Kasisi as a child after losing her parents. She studied diligently throughout school and graduated with excellent results from nursing school. Seeing her potential and dedication to caring for children, the Sisters nominated her for medical studies in Poland. Today, Evelyn is a sixth-year medical student in Bydgoszcz, having just completed her surgical internship. In May this year, she will receive her diploma and officially become a DOCTOR. She’s our second child to fulfill their dream of becoming a physician!

At Kasisi, we understand that helping isn’t about finding a one-size-fits-all solution, but about truly knowing a person and understanding what they need in their specific situation, right now. For some, we provide a fishing rod; for others, a fish.

And to you, we extend our deepest gratitude for BEING HERE with us!!! Your trust and support allow us to help wisely, tailoring assistance to the needs of our children ❤️

Passport to the Future – Donate a School Starter Kit

A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
