James has surprised us on more than one occasion, even calling at 6am on a Saturday morning to say a heartfelt thank you for making his biggest dream of medical school come true. This time, completely unexpectedly, we received a letter from him. The adventure James has embarked on is coming to an end….
“I can’t believe that I am coming to the end of my studies and at the same time entering a world where I will be of service to others. Looking back, I can see the immense meaning of every event that took place during those years. They have made me understand and mature a lot. But the greatest strength has been given to me by the love and belief in me of so many people. Mamushia, all of Kasisi, friends in Poland – they are the ones who opened the magical door to the world of medicine for me and have walked with me step by step over these years, supporting me.
Throughout this journey, I kept looking for something to captivate me. And I found it! It’s neurosurgery. I know it’s a very demanding field and it won’t be easy. However, there is something special about it. When you start operating, nothing else exists for long hours, the passing of which you don’t even notice; you only focus on one thing – achieving your goal.
Someone once told me to be grateful for the smallest things and make the most of the opportunities given. Not for yourself, but for the sake of others, because therein lies the source of true joy. I have already convinced myself of this! That’s why I am MEGA EXTRA grateful for the chance I was given. Even more so because it was not a small thing, but an EXTRA MEGA chance that opened my eyes to change the world, and I hope to be able to do that in neurosurgery and in my everyday life.”
James starts his final – VI – year of university in two weeks’ time, and we are rooting hard for him. At the end of the year, he will take the most important exam – the medical licensing exam. Today, we know that he will make it. The road he has travelled is one of spreading his wings, which has also brought with it the setbacks necessary to finally make that all-important flight.
We, of course, are not slowing down and are fundraising for James’ final year of education. We know that with you we will make it. We definitely will!
A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
