“Sister Mariola says it’s good that it rained. At least people will have water.” In Zambia, there’s been a brief period of colder weather. Clouds have densely covered the sky. A few days ago, substantial rain fell, but there weren’t many like it. The last one came too late to change anything. The corn won’t grow. The president has declared a state of emergency in the country.
Kasisi remains as lively and cheerful as ever. The older children have gone to school. The younger ones have time to play, dance, sing and relax. Everything around them works well. One thing in Kasisi has changed, though: the background sound for daily activities is now that of a working generator.
The drought has many dire consequences. It devastates agriculture—we feel it at the checkout with every purchase; and it ruins the country’s energy independence—we feel that too. There is no power for 8 hours each day.
The problem is that without power and food purchases, it’s impossible to ensure safety for 250 children. We have assured the Sisters that we won’t run out of money. We will keep reminding you about that for a long time because without you, it won’t work.
The crisis affects everyone. Every day, our neighbors from nearby villages, who suddenly found themselves in a desperate situation, knock on Kasisi’s door. We are also here to help everyone in need. Kasisi is a safe place, a happy home. We want no one to think even for a moment that it is otherwise.
