On our way to see little Divine, who is fighting acute malnutrition and tuberculosis, we met a young man. A moment of disbelief. But no, it was Olivier after all! Today, he is a young man entering adulthood with a head full of passion and plans for the future. And immediately it became our dream to bring the less than two-year-old Divine to where Olivier is now.
Do you remember Olivier? Fatherless, given up by his mother who was unable to care for him, suffering from an incurable disease and wanting to give up on life. He refused to take his medication, not believing that it could change anything. It only took a few weeks in Kasisi for the boy to realise that he LIVES in our home, that no one here will accept him giving up, that he is not alone in his fight against his illness. New friendships and plenty of opportunities and reasons to enjoy life superseded the defiance and erased memories of the difficult beginnings. The treatment started bringing results. The boy gained strength and went from being a great football fan to becoming one of Kasisi’s best players.
We chat with Olivier for a short while because he is in a hurry to get to school. He tells us about his dreams of going to university, his love of gospel music and, of course, Robert Lewandowski – there is only one champion! A thought immediately springs to mind – we really, thanks to your gigantic commitment, have managed to create a concrete, long term perspective for our kids, and not just find ad hoc solutions to single problems: today we already have a very well-equipped hospital, not just an emergency unit.
In Kasisi, our aid is always tailor-made. At the time, in addition to having his treatment arranged, Olivier needed above all to be convinced that he was wanted, loved by someone in this world and that his life had great meaning. He needed to learn that rejection by those closest to him and a chronic illness weren’t the end of everything. You have helped him a lot in this! Today we are fighting for all of this for Divine. He is just beginning his journey. He still has more than one struggle ahead of him, but now in the coming weeks the most important battle will be fought – for his LIFE!
We very much need your prayers, warm thoughts and support for Divine. Today we whispered in the little one’s ear that there is a whole army of friends in Poland who are going into this battle with him!
A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
