There is no telling who will play the role of mum today – that can change daily. Only that hot sun is a given, and the fact that if the baby cries, it will get something to help it fall asleep.
“I need money for my baby, I have no way to feed it. Please help me,” plead the women roaming between cars and passers-by, holding semi-conscious babies in their hands. Older children are dragged by their tiny hand or forced to beg on their own. They know that a child arouses sympathy, even if it is not theirs.
Eight-month-old Albert had known no other life than begging on the street before reaching Kasisi. The same goes for Blessing and Christopher. Two-year-old Charles and four-year-old Gilbert, brothers, were regularly separated by people who saw them as a tool for making money. All in all, the six little lives are only just finding out what their own clean bed and carefree childhood is in Kasisi. For them, this first “Welcome Home” has a special meaning – because it is the first time they can experience it.
