The Kasisi cemetery is a special place, associated with love rather than goodbyes.
It is a place where, with a laugh, one remembers the games and mischief they played together. With a tear in one’s eye, one recalls their joint struggles with mathematics. With warmth one arranges flowers, the colour of which simply brings life to mind.
Thanks to Sister Mariola, the former humble mounds of earth have been replaced by small memorials. Each belonging to a child whose life was of great importance – to us in Kasisi and to you. A child is ‘ours’ from the moment he or she arrives in Kasisi and is ours even after death.
One such child was Christopher (Chris) Sakala, whom leukaemia took from us on the 15th of July 2020. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed, and we feel that Chris has simply been with us all this time – he has left behind a light of hope, which we are kindling with even greater force this year. We have created a fund in Chris’s name, the proceeds of which we are donating to children’s oncology treatment in Lusaka.
Turn death into hope with us – light a symbolic candle for Chris, which will become a very real help for little oncology patients!
A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
