I have been coming back to Kasisi regularly for 11, maybe 12 years now. I come in the winter and in the summer. I have spent Children’s Day here 2, maybe 3 times. I know very well that Children’s Day is celebrated in Kasisi not only on the 1st of June. It is celebrated here every day.
The complex but short lives of our children are no cause for joy. Most of them would be hard to endure even for us adults. In Kasisi they are not endured. In Kasisi, they are written from the beginning.
Such was the case with Frank, who years ago almost got kicked out of Kasisi when Sister Mariola found out that he was hiding his medication from her instead of taking it. He heard from her that in Kasisi one lives, not dies.
Moses had had enough of everything. Sickle cell anaemia had turned him from an energetic child into a profoundly physically disabled young man. He gets everything he needs here. All the sisters expect of him is to accept their love and be able to enjoy even the smallest success.
I leave Kasisi with the fear that I will not see so many smiling faces at once for a long time. Thank you for helping the sisters create a safe space for these wonderful kids. We don’t dare ask you for much, but we do ask you to give at least a little on a regular basis, because that little bit makes a huge difference in the lives of these extraordinary children who just want a chance at a happy and safe childhood.
Adoptions from the Heart is the project where it all began. Its first charges are already establishing happy adult lives, studying and starting families. Today we have 260 children under our care. Each of them deserves the same.
