When we focus too much on the big picture we often overlook the little things. International Children’s Day may seem like any other day of the year, but it is a great opportunity to pause and honor our children. This is a day where we can all turn a collective ear to the hopes and of the children at Kasisi.
Yesterday at dinner sister Mariola explained to us the importance of treating each child as an individual. In a house with 250 young ones, this doesn’t mean that things are divided equally. One person might need a new pair of pants, another child will want a soda, or chocolate, while others might not like sweets at all but would love to own a watch. Children’s Day serves as a reminder that, just like in any other family, we, the Kasisi community, need to respond to a child’s individual needs. We also need to remember that it’s not just about meeting their basic needs. Giving them the space to dream and helping them reach their dreams is just as important.
We’ve launched a fundraiser on our homepage. We cannot put a price on our children’s dreams. We do know that many would love to own a watch, others would love a book, toy, a new dress or football shoes. We listen to them so that we can surprise them by making at least one of their wishes come true.
It’s easy to get caught up in big projects and long-term plans, but the sisters at Kasisi are teaching us the importance of being mindful of individual needs.
